Solar energy generation as a non-dispatchable energy source has become popular among the community and many install rooftop solar panels to generate Electricity. Utilities around the world use various methods of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) to store the energy generated by non-dispatchable energy sources and are used as a primary as well as secondary frequency control devices. This paper focusses on the use of Battery ESS (BESS) installed in a single distribution feeder as a compensator when Under Frequency Load Shedding (UFLS) occurs in the main power network. The paper has identified the importance of such system to a low inertia power system containing micro grids. The results of simulations carried on a 33 kV feeder show the gains of BESS is illustrated. The paper concludes by focusing on the capacity of BESS needed to be installed to act as a fast-active power injector in case of under frequency load shedding occurs in the system.
