An effective journey from meter to cash - always starts with the meter!

In 2017, DeKalb County (DeKalb) Department of Watershed Management (DWM) completed a technical review of its 0.01905 m (3/4") and 0.025 m (1") residential water meters and its overall "meter to cash" program. A detailed approach was undertaken by the County which first included defining the technical criteria that the meters would be evaluated upon. Bench testing of the meters soon followed along with a series of meter scoring workshops. Key technical criteria included life cycle cost of the meter, meter accuracy, and flow characteristics. The highest performing water meters became an integral part of the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI). By combining results from the technical meter comparison, lifecycle cost analysis, bench testing results, and meter scoring exercise, DWM was able to identify the meter manufacturer and model that would improve meter billing accuracy and customer service for DeKalb County.
