Lean practices was originally implemented in manufacturing processes but has been applied to other organizational functions, including new product development (NPD). Studies show that applying lean reduces NPD process times and costs. However, NPD process improvement resulting from applying lean is different in each organization. There are two possible factors that can be related to NPD process performance. The first factor is the number of lean practices used. Most lean practices are designed to support a particular lean principle. To successfully implement lean, it is recommended that organizations apply all five lean principles and use different practices to address each lean principle. Thus, if organizations apply all five lean principles, more practices are more likely to be adopted. The second factor is the years of experience with lean. Organizations that have implemented lean for a longer time are more likely to see more improvement in NPD process performance because of adoption and adjustment time. The objective of this research was to determine whether or not there is a relationship between (1) the number of practices used by organizations and NPD process performance measured by time, cost, and quality performance indicators and (2) the years of experience with lean and NPD process performance measured by time, cost, and quality performance indicators. An internet survey was used in this research. The data were collected from manufacturing organizations in the U.S.
