COMPARISON OF THE ENGINEERING MANANGEMENT MASTER'S PROGRAM IN THE U.S

Since its introduction at the University of Missouri-Rolla in the 1960's, the study of Engineering Management has spread to universities across the country. Today, the study of Engineering Management is available to undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D. students. The American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) was founded in the 1970's in order to further the field. They have become the standard setting organization for Engineering Management through their University and individual certification programs. In an effort to evaluate and analyze the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM) program, ten schools in the U.S. were selected based on their certification by ASEM, association with ASEM, or their adherence to ASEM standards. The criteria for comparison were admission requirements, the curriculum, and the completion requirements. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the UTC's MSEM program and recommend areas for improvement. Raising the minimum GPA, requiring higher admissions testing scores (such as TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, etc.), and documenting applicable work experience through supervisor recommendation, are all recommendations designed to improve the overall quality of the students who enroll. For students in the program, improvement would be achieved by adding electives and specialization options, and a focus on writing throughout the tenure in a variety of classes. The results provided the basis for some suggested improvements for the MSEM program at UTC, as well as to improve the writing and communication skills of students at UTC.
