Large scale solar PV generation for Southeast Asian countries

The objective of this paper is to present the results of a study conducted to: a) investigate the feasibility and b) to estimate the potential benefits of using large scale solar photovoltaic (PV) energy technology for electricity generation in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) region and then using electricity network of the countries to share this electricity. In future, it would be possible to expand this network to the other neighboring countries via land or the underwater high voltage direct current cables, but this depends on countries trade and political relationship. Most of SE-Asian nations are located in subtropical region (around tropic of cancer) with high level of sun radiations, so it seems to be reasonable to use solar energy technologies to convert sun energy into electricity at large scale. The results of this study show that despite the expenses and losses incurred in long distance of power transmission of the region, it appears that in long term this idea to be competitive because of the high solar radiation levels in these areas. As a result of this, all sectors in the Southeast Asian countries region, i.e. residential, commercial and industry would enjoy affordable electricity from natural sun resources. Supplementation of regional produced electricity from conventional sources, together with substantial integrated energy storage, would allow a high solar electricity fraction to be achieved in the Southeast Asian countries region for sustainable electrical energy.
