摘要

In our paper we present the current status of our threedimensional virtual library model (3DVLM) based chiefly on the organization and classification principles of the ancient Library of Alexandria developed in the so-called Pinakes by Callimachus in the 3rd century BC. Our model does emphasize the classical heritage our culture is based on, and in this tradition the life and work of Callimachus, beyond doubt, play a central role. And although it seems to be difficult to convey the message of ancient times to the present-day culture, language learning can serve as a bridge to transform and provide the ancient knowledge for the users of the internet era. In order to support language learners, we selected and preprocessed some Wikipedia texts (in English) about Callimachus and his works. Then we started to improve the content of the selected texts with additional items which might be useful for language learners (e.g. dictionary and encyclopedia entries, selected concordances, quotations etc.). Because the arrangement of texts and their relationships with the associated items are of vital importance in the learning process, we took full advantage of the 3D environment, mapping and visualizing the compiled material using the MaxWhere Seminar System which is, in our opinion, one of the most useful and successful inventions of the CogInfoCom movement. We would like to achieve two main purposes making use of the 3DVLM. First, we would like to help and motivate our users to increase their knowledge about the ancient Alexandrian times. The model is intended to support its users to understand and interpret the selected texts `at once', providing them with the necessary linguistic and background knowledge. Second, we hope that our users will gradually develop their English knowledge and language skills in the course of reading, understanding and memorizing the preprocessed content delivered by our virtual library.
