An eight-story concrete building contained four floors of condominiums located over a fitness facility. The homeowners above complained about noise from amplified music and speech plus audible "thumps" caused by weights dropped in the facility below. The building owner commissioned an investigation to identify mitigation techniques so the fitness facility could "keep peace" with its neighbors. It was found that amplified speech and music were sometimes audible in certain units on the floor above the facility. In addition, impact noise from dropped weights could be detected in distant units four floors above. A number of controlled airborne and impact tests were conducted to quantify the relative degree of noise intrusions within candidate residential units. These tests involved using 1) a very powerful sound system plus, 2) an 18-kilogram spherical weight dropped repeatedly onto a rubber mat. The most affected residential units were identified and a series of criteria were proposed to help minimize noise intrusions from fitness facility operations.
