A Study on the 3D Block Technique Urban Inundation by Unity 3D

Urban flooding occurs when the rainfall amount is more than the amount of discharge through the sewers and drainage facilities. To reduce the flooding damage, studies are actively being conducted to diagnose the vulnerability to urban flooding and to forecast the areas that will be flooded when heavy rains occur. To identify and respond to urban flooding situations, this study also deals with effective visualization and analysis function development using the Unity 3D engine. First, the test bed was determined by selecting an area with a dense population and frequent flooding. To achieve virtual visualization, a virtual base map was constructed using the Unity 3D engine terrain. To achieve three-dimensional (3D) urban flooding modeling, the overflow by manhole was used. The data were converted into an array, underwent the 3D block creation modularization constructed in the Unity 3D engine, and were modeled. The 3D block module was arranged so as to receive the overflow input values, redistribute them according to the legend based on arbitrary criteria, and intuitively identify the flooding depth levels. For more efficient visualization, the buildings and overflow amount in the test bed were simultaneously displayed. In addition, by mapping the past flooding traces, administrative districts, road networks, evacuation information, etc., the system was constructed so as to compare the past data with the current flooding data. The 3D block creation module developed herein can effectively analyze urban flooding and can intuitively identify urban flooding situations.
