The axolotl retina presents cues that promote the attachment, survival, differentiation and integration of mammalian retinal progenitor cells, while a mammalian (porcine) retina does not. These results support the investigation of regeneration permissive retinal ECM from lower vertebrates (axolotl) as a cell delivery platform to treat retinal degenerative diseases.
