Transport mean choice between urban and periurban zones in a metropolitan area

Transport mean choice is the result of the socioeconomic user characteristics and transport attributes, and one variable that affects the transport mean choice is the metropolitan expansion of the cities. An analysis of the transport means choice was made, using discrete choice models and considering the users characteristics and the transport means attributes in the urban and periurban zones, to determine the principal user characteristic in the transport mean choice in both areas. A case study was carried out in the Queretaro Metropolitan Area (QMA). Four transport modes were analyzed: car and bus (motorized), and bicycle and pedestrian (active mode). A comparison was determined between the peripheral and the conurbed zones. Results shown that user's income is one of the most significant variables in transport mode choice in both zones, followed by educational level, and the generalized travel cost as transport mean attribute.
