In some countries, multi-lane freeways often employ the keep-right-expect-to-pass rule that requires drivers to drive on the right-most lane unless they are passing another vehicle. In this paper, the mathematical model of the keep-right-except-to-pass rule on dual lane and multi-lane is built based on the modified cellular automata model (CA). First, the cellular automata model is simulated using C# programing. Second, according to the real simulated results, analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is employed to analyze the models of "keep-right" driving mode under different traffic flow from the perspectives of efficiency, safety, energy consumption, etc., as well as to compare the advantage and disadvantage between "keep-right" driving and other driving models. Finally, the authors examined the "keep-right" driving rules and applied to right-hand driving countries.
