A friction test experimental apparatus has been developed for measuring frictional behavior in a simple belt drive. The device is able to capture stick-slip instabilities in a simple belt-pulley system, which will further be used for experimental validation, and/or experimental updating, of flexible multibody simulators formulated to capture Schallamach wave behavior. Obvious transient and steady states have been detected in the experimentally-measured response of the system. To demonstrate its performance, we have investigated the effect of the loading conditions on the mean friction force developed on the belt. Both increasing the belt tension and resistance torque results in an increase in belt friction.
