Connections between the principle of stationary action and optimal control are exploited and generalised to explore the relationship between Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman partial differential equations and two-point boundary value problems constrained by energy conserving dynamics. A duality concept arising from stationarity, and a fundamental solution for solving such problems, is subsequently proposed.
