Commissioning a world scale ammonia plant without incident: - Providing Proactive, Not Reactive Support

In 2016, as part of the Ma'aden Umm Wu'al Phosphate Project, a 3,300 mtpd ammonia plant was commissioned in Ras Al-Khair, Kingdom of Saudi-Arabia, using the thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions (tkIS) proprietary dual pressure ammonia process. By providing proactive technical support, Johnson Matthey and tkIS were able to predict and prepare for any issues occurring, instead of having to react when issues become incidents. This paper details the procedures and principles used to ensure that catalyst related construction and hot commissioning activities were completed without error or incident. Utilizing the years of experience between Johnson Matthey, tkIS, Ma'aden Phosphate Company and main EPC contractor, DAELIM, the plant delivered first ammonia production 25 days ahead of schedule and without catalyst related safety or quality incidents.
