LiDAR DATA DISTRIBUTION USING LiPAD, AN OPEN-SOURCE BASED LiDAR PORTAL FOR ARCHIVING AND DISTRIBUTION

The Phil-LiDAR programs of the Philippines were initiated with the goal of producing hazard and resource maps using LiDAR technology. To achieve this, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) engaged the University of the Philippines (UP) and fifteen (15) Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) throughout the country. Since data acquisition, pre-processing and quality checking are centrally operated in UP, an effective data access and distribution system is needed to allow data processing and validating at various research stations across the nation. This paper details the data archiving and distribution processes between the program partners and components utilizing the system developed by the Data Archiving and Distribution (DAD) component of Phil-LiDAR 1 called LiPAD, or LiDAR Portal for Archiving and Distribution. LiPAD is a combination of a web portal derived from GeoNode, an open-source geospatial content management system, to handle spatial data management and the use of File Transfer Protocol (FTP) as the primary distribution method for the data products of Phil-LiDAR 1. The current capabilities of the LiPAD include the dissemination of data coverages and retrieval of processed LiDAR data, elevation data products and orthophotographs at varying access levels for different user roles, spanning the different processing locations. LiPAD is envisioned to provide a robust framework to support efficient data exchange of voluminous raw and derived LiDAR data products in the Philippines.
