A human factors approach to healthcare system redesign emphasizes the involvement of multiplestakeholders in the process. This study identifies work system factors facilitating and hinderingthe collaboration of multiple stakeholders in a healthcare system redesign project. Weinterviewed 10 stakeholders participating in the redesign of the family-centered rounds process ina pediatric hospital, and conducted qualitative content analysis of the interview transcripts usingthe work system model of Smith and Carayon-Sainfort (1989). Various facilitators and barriers tostakeholder collaboration in healthcare system redesign were identified, such as personalcharacteristics, team characteristics, organizational structure and culture. Results of this study canbe used to improve the process used to redesign healthcare work systems and processes thatinvolve multiple stakeholders.
