In this paper we present an explicit description of an innovative technique for the real sampling and hold method by considering a real finite pulse instead an ideal one to sample the signal. Fractional order sampling and hold devices are considered in general while including the zero-order hold and the first-order hold as particular cases. This process leads to an increment in the degrees of freedom and may, therefore, be very useful for adaptive control purposes. Its usefulness in this field relies on the use of the degrees of freedom to improve the stability of the discrete plant zeros. It also involves the use of multirate sampling with a fast sampling being used to approximate via zero-order holds the continuous signal during the real sampling pulse, providing a simple technique to deal with other multirate systems.
