In the magnetic flux leakage (MFL) testing technique, the vertical component of MFL signal contains essential right-angle information of defect, which is useful for the defect profile estimation. This paper analyzes the right-angle characteristic of vertical component of MFL signal, and sums up two types of signal feature for different kinds of right angle. A method based on the vertical component signal feature is also proposed to estimate the defect opening profile. Simulation result validates the well performance for the defect opening profile estimation, especially for the right-angel detection.
