The method involves measuring an acoustic signal of a non-return valve (10) to be monitored during a measuring interval at a closed condition of the valve. Another acoustic signal of another non-return valve (11) i.e. outlet valve, is measured during another measuring interval at a closed condition of the latter valve. A determination is made whether the former valve comprises a defect based on characteristic values of the two acoustic signals. An evaluation interval is determined for the two measuring intervals, where the characteristic values take a minimum value in the evaluation interval. An independent claim is also included for a device for monitoring valves of a pump, comprising a sensor.
