At Doña Juana sanitary landfill, Bogotá accumulates 6,500 tons of waste perday, almost a quarter of the production of waste in Colombia (23.6 %), this informationshows the absence of projects and programs that focus on product design intended tominimize the environmental impact of solid waste. This study focuses on a first stage in thedetection of the main generator of solid waste (i.e. packaging) at the various food courts ofUniversidad El Bosque. Subsequently, the most commonly consumed products wereidentified and a preliminary proposal of redesign was made by using eco-design toolsapplied to the products in question, based on the methodology of Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) and the use of Simapro software. At the same time, redesign of the product isevaluated through a particular eco-design tool, namely Assessment of the Environmentalproduct strategy. Results suggest that one of the best-selling products is slush. This productis sold in a plastic cup (polyethylene-terephthalate), accompanied by a plastic spoon (highimpact polypropylene). According to the analysis of impact, over 50% of the environmentalimpact of the cup and the spoon is caused by the use of fossil raw materials that are notrenewable. Therefore, it is important to develop a product proposal applying eco-designstrategies in order to reduce environmental impact.
