FIELD: continuous casting of metals, applicable for controlled preliminary reduction of thin slabs coming out of continuous casting plant. SUBSTANCE: preliminary reduction is accomplished by a great number of roller pairs grouped into one or more assemblies or unit of preliminary reduction; the first unit of preliminary reduction is installed just behind (below) the bearing rollers; the pairs of rollers have at least one moving roller. The pairs of rollers are connected to pressure transducers and hydraulic dynamometers; provision is made for position pickups, the pressure transducers and position pickups are connected to the monitoring and data processing unit, and at least the first pair of rollers works the slab that has just come out of the mould with a thin hardened skin. The method provides for preliminary reduction with reduction of thickness of the slab coming out at least from the last pair of rollers by 10% so as to eliminate the liquid nucleus and bring the zones into contact in a two-phase state so as to improve the central structure and minimize the central separation.
