The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) investments in the intelligent transportation system (ITS) platform will lead to a second revolution in the U.S. transportation industry. The field of ITS has been experiencing a remarkable growth in a wide range of vehicle applications research, categorized into safety, eco drivingavigation and convenience. This paper focuses on the eco navigation application and aims to propose a navigation application advising drivers of the most environmentally friendly travel path. The driver is advised of an optimal (shortest/fastest/eco) route which is to include highest connection nodes offering increased re-rerouting flexibility in case of traffic jams are to occur. This paper presents an in-vehicle eco navigation methodology with the prospect of being implemented in a new progressive vehicle navigation system.
