In the Optical Submarine Cable System field nowadays, it is possible to establish a point to multi-point link, by splitting the signal using a Branching Unit (BU). The reasons to choose a BU position in a cable system, might be in some cases more political than technica. Sometimes it is installed in a position that is not always technically recommended. This paper describes the precautions needed during the installation and the impacts on the transmission performance of a BU, due to its installation in very shallow water.
