Variations of Sustaining Communal Activities of Marginal Community

The depopulation of aging and low-birthrate society in Japan is not only the issue of rural areas.Discussions on the "marginal community" have reached new stage, while many thinks inviting a certain number of new residents or reorganization of rural community is the substantial solution, some researchers indicated marginal community does not as easily disappear as is expected.As my previous research showed, "part-time residency" is actually one of the most practical solutions for the marginal community, and the communities are not necessarily sustained by the full time residents.This paper explores the alternative possibilities of sustaining communal activities focusing on the communities in two islands located in the Inland sea of Japan.As a result of this study, as long as part-time residents, there are even more alternatives to sustain communal activities: such as activities based on corporate social responsibility, public interest incorporated foundation, non profit organization, and even artist activities are contributing to communal activities.Variations of sustaining communal activities are much more diverse than imagined.
