Yes, Very Small Organizations in the IT Sector Can Benefit from Being Recognised Internationally

Industry and big organizations recognize the value of VSEs, i.e. enterprises, organizations, projects or departments with up to 25 people [1], in contributing with emerging new technology that bigger organizations cannot use as easily nor incorporate in their solutions as fast. Like for any business, VSEs in the IT business sector face challenging and strong competition and adopting "best practices", standardizing processes and obtaining an international recognition or certification, are key factors for success. However it has been clearly observed that most of existing international standards do not meet the needs of SMEs: being too complex and requiring intensive resources and skills. The new standard ISO/IEC 29110 is VSE tailor-made, lightweight, certifiable and compatible with traditional models such as CMMI [2], ISO/IEC 330xx [8], or ISO/IEC 9000 [9]. This paper introduces the benefits for the VSEs and their customers for being recognized through the existing certification process and scheme.
