Knowledge Management using Social Media:A Comparative Study between Blogs and Facebook

Blogging and Facebook have gained increasingrecognition as tools to support online informationsharing and management. This study examined if, andin which aspects, blogs and Facebook scaffold and/orconsolidate student users’ knowledge capture, sharingand application during their internship. A mixedmethodsdesign was employed to investigate users’practices and perceptions of blogs and Facebook inonline information management. The study found thatusers generally hold positive perception on using blogsand Facebook for online knowledge management. Inparticular, Facebook appears to be a more facilitatingplatform for users to reflect upon prior knowledge,capture new experiences and provide feedback that isconstructive to cultivating knowledge sharingenvironment. It was found that Facebook support theexpression of social support among users, therebyreinforcing their motivation in participating inknowledge management processes.
