New High Temperature Polymeric Substrate for Thin Film Flexible Photovoltaic Modules

Polymeric films are attractive substrate materialsfor flexible thin film photovoltaic applications. Theyoffer many desirable characteristics, such as highelectrical insulating properties, transparency, flexibility,toughness, smoothness, and availability asroll goods in long lengths. The potential of polymericsubstrates has repeatedly been demonstratedin various reports of record efficiencies withboth CIGS and CdTe deposition technologies.However, while the reported efficiencies in smallscale lab cells have been impressive, the promiseof large scale, high quality, cost-effective roll-to-rollproduction has yet to be realized. This is a criticalneed in order for thin film flex to competeeffectively against traditional crystalline silicontechnology and find commercial success in themarketplace. The f°Cus of the development effortreported here is to produce a superior polymericsubstrate film which can help enable modulemanufacturers to realize the potential of roll-to-rollthin film flex PV on a commercial scale.
