A method for controlling the arcing time of a circuit-breaker is described based on an algorithm for prediction of current zero times. Controlled switching of high-voltage (HV) circuit-breakers has become a widely accepted technique for reduction of transients arising from the switching of well defined loads. Typical controlled switching applications include shunt capacitor and reactor banks. A comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art in controlled switching has been published by CIGRE Working Group A3.07 [1,2].
