A simple low-cost microwave log-periodic dipole array is proposed for use in measuring E fields in near as well as far-field EMC investigations. The prototype is built using a standard 62 mil thick 4-layer FR4 stackup and benefits from placing the elements on the internal layers 2 and 3, fed by a microstrip line formed in layers 1 and 2. The prototype operates from approximately 8 to 20 GHz with good return loss (averaging -10 dB) and reasonably flat gain (+/- 2 dB). Example applications are described.
