University — Industry partnership in the context of regional and local development

The importance of universities in national, regional and local systems is obvious and the universities are aware of this impact. The environment or local society in which they operate requires quantification of impacts and so this problem increases attention of all stakeholders. The paper deals with the fields of action of universities in regional and local context. It also includes comparison of impacts of selected universities in Slovakia, calculation short-term local economic impact of full-time students to universities on the city (Bratislava, Kos?ice, z?ilina), in which they are located. This is the so-called performance parts “backward” relationships that give rise to one of the many positive changes in the region. The influence of a university on its host city is extensive and multi-faceted. Monitoring the economic impact of a university on annual or periodical basis bring new perspectives as they asses its influence on regional and local development. The contribution show the measurement of the impact of a university - industry partnership on a region that is usually carried out by means of impact assessment studies, surveys, a microeconomic approach based on production functions and on the basis of cross-sectional and quasi-experimental research. The basis of all the above measurement forms lies in the comparison of actual economic activity “with” and “without” the existence of a university in the given region.
