Felt Leadership: An Essential Ingredient in Successful PSM Implementation

"Felt Leadership" is a term that is frequently mentioned in today's PSM conferences andinformal conversations as a quality that must be demonstrated by management if PSMimplementation is going to be successful. Interestingly, these two words were firstintroduced by the DuPont Company over 20 years ago and the context was very differentthen and not even directly related to safety. Felt Leadership was one of the six attributesof a "High Performing Work System." As one of these 6 attributes, it was deemedessential to achieve outstanding operations and business results through people. Thispaper will not only describe "felt leadership" in meaningful, practical terms but will alsodeliver insights as to why it is both appropriate and necessary for effective PSMimplementation as well as high performing work organizations.
