Today, the research of radon is one of the most important theme in nuclear physics and environmental source. Research in indoor air radon and outdoor air radon are very significant for hygiene. Outdoor air radon changes with geographical region, season, month and hours of day. And indoor air radon pertains from outdoor air radon, buildings material and ventilation. Naturally occurring radiation accounts for approximately 80 percent of our exposure. Most of our exposure is due to indoor radon, followed by radiation from outer space and from the earth's crust. Sixty-eight percent of our exposure to natural sources of radiation usually comes from radon. Radon is naturally radioactive isotope and decays into other radioactive elements. When radon short-lived decay products are inhaled, they can lodge in the lungs and deliver radiation doses to sensitive lung tissue as the progeny continue to decay. When you breathe air containing a large amount of radon, the radiation can damage your lungs and eventually cause lung cancer. Scientists believe that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. It is estimated that 7000 to 30000 Americans die each year from radon-induced lung cancer. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths and smokers exposed to radon are at higher risk than nonsmokers. The basic of sources of radon and its decay products in air are: soil, rocks, water and natural gas. Radon concentration much differs from other different sites on world sphere.
