The CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lights) and LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps are energy-efficient that have replaced the inefficacious incandescent lamps (ILs). However, CFL and LED lamps are typical nonlinear loads that induce harmonics into the distribution system. This paper studies and compares the power quality problem resulting from the new lamps. Extending prior work in this area, we perform the laboratory tests on IL, CFL and LED lamps with the similar luminous flux simultaneously to compare their power quality emission characteristics. A comprehensive comparison is quantified in terms of the power quality impacts and economic cost of the widespread adoption of CFLs and LED lamps with the similar luminous flux on the distribution system by the simulation model.
