Sample-probe interactions in terahertz near field imaging

Experimental and computational studies of the interaction between a photoconductive probe and a planar sample have been performed. We find that the excitation of TEM waveguide modes in the gap between sample and probe, together with a cross-polarization effect must be taken into account when interpreting images.
