This paper presents a framework to study the interaction of a viscous fluid and rigid bodies experiencing arbitrary motions. The rigid body motions can be either prescribed or determined by equations of motion. The flow field is described by solving the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on overlapping grids. Arbitrary motions are conveniently represented by a series of composed transformation matrices. A moving overlapping grid method is used to handle the body motion, and the velocity and acceleration of a moving grid point can be computed using the transformation matrices. The framework is applied to study 2D and 3D moving body problems.
