The enantiomeric separations of three neonicotinoid insecticides (compounds 1, 2, and 3) were performed on a Chirobiotic V chiral column by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) under a new-polar mobile phase mode, using methanol and ethanol with triethylamine as the basic additive as the mobile phase. Compound 1 obtained no separation under all the mobile phase, while compound 2 and 3 were partially separated. Ethanol provides better chiral resolution than methanol, and triethylamine added in ethanol or methanol is in favour of enantiomeric separation for neonicotinoid insecticides. The main chiral recognition mechanism between these three neonicotinoid insecticides and vancomycin CSP might be the hydrogen-bonding interactions, steric interactions and poor ionization interactions.
