The air turborocket engine (ATR) consists of a fan that feeds the combustor, a nozzle that expands the combustion products to generate thrust and a turbine to drive the fan. The unique feature of the ATR is that the compressor and its driving turbine are not coupled by the same working fluid, as the turbine is driven by expanding the fuel before it is burned in the combustor. Hence, the compressor performance does not affect the available power on the shaft. This characteristic extends the ATR operating envelope into the high-supersonic domain.
