This paper presents an algorithm to partition an entire surface model of arbitrary topology type into quadrilateral domains for spline-based surface modeling. The procedure starts from a dense triangle mesh with possible sharp features, such as creases, boundary edges, corners and darts. Loops of creases and boundary edges are first identified. A global triangulation is further defined based on the network of sharp features. A global quadrilateral partition is then obtained through various geometric and topological operations upon the global triangulation and the initial dense mesh.
