Application of Standardized Psychoacoustic Parameters for IT-Noise Assessment

Today information technologies (IT) are dominating our everyday life. Often, poor sound quality of IT equipment leads to annoyance, although the sound pressure levels are relatively low. Therefore, there is still the necessity to intentionally improve the sound quality of IT-products to enhance the perceived quality and thus the general acceptance of the product. The sound has to convey information about functionality and operating status as well as must create an impression of high quality and performance. In Germany the acoustic parameters time-variant loudness (DIN 45631/A1) and sharpness (DIN 45692) were recently approved, the standardization of the parameter roughness is under way. The presentation will demonstrate the explanatory power of few standardized parameters for IT-noise classification and assessment. For it, different IT-equipment noises are analyzed and the results are discussed. It will show the applicability of those specific parameters to the evaluation of sound quality in the field of information technologies.
