The Construction Schedule Log: Charting the Project Path

Over the years, schedulers have focused attention on the individual project baseline andsuccessive updates for the purpose of planning, progress reporting and determination of timeextensions on construction projects. However, there is planning, organizational and analytical value inkeeping a detailed log of schedule updates produced during the course of a project. This includestrend analysis, overview of the project timeline, schedule update highlights and a quick reference forproject status. Like a ships log, the construction schedule log tracks the project’s path and can aid theproject team in charting the course to project completion. The schedule log also serves as a useful toolfor educating attorneys and consultants who may be called in to perform forensic analyses.Additionally, this paper introduces a dual-tracking schedule update method that uses the log as anessential analysis tool to isolate contractor schedule changes from activity performance achievedduring the update period.These and other related tools are recommended for organizational, decision-making and forensicanalysis by project cost engineers and schedulers.
