The effect of the initial temperature (T_i) on the performance of the M1020 ignition cartridge was examined to provide information for suggesting improvements to the 120-mm mortar system and for further validation of an existing numerical model (3D-MIB) [1]. Experiments were performed on both M1020 ignition cartridges and their constituent flash tubes so that the influence of the flash tube to the overall initial temperature effect on the ignition cartridge can be assessed. The pressurization behavior of the flash tube at initial temperatures of -45° and 63°C was observed using pressure measurements taken during flash tube firings. Likewise, the initial temperature dependence of ignition cartridge behavior was tested by measuring pressures within the ignition cartridge during static firings conducted at -45, -12, and 63°C. Analysis of test data show that the average pressure within the ignition cartridge increases monotonically, but nonlinearly with an increasing slope as T_i increases.
