@@The biological effects of an element are highly dependent on its chemical form,hence an accurate determination of each species is important to fully assess the toxicity and the bioavailability of an element. The element selenium (Se) is one of the essential micronutrients for humans,and it is known for its antioxidant properties and involvement with the prevention of cancer and other illnesses.Selenium deficiency in humans and animals has been associated with a number of pathologic conditions (Zuberbuehler et al.,2006).However,the interval between deficiency and toxicity is fairly narrow and strongly dependent on its chemical form. The concentration of Se in animal feed should meet minimum requirements of livestock,e.g.,0.05-0.1 mg/kg dry matter (GisselNielsen et al.,1998).Reliable and validated analytical methods for Se are urgently needed to evaluate the safety of food (Polatajko et al.,2006). The aim of the present study was to determine the content of total Se and analyze the speciation of Se in selected animal feed.
