Lipid Formulation Toolbox for Lipophilic Plant Extracts

Self-emulsifying drug delivery system (SEDDS)technology was applied to the design of lipid-basedformulations of a lipophilic plant extract. Several lipidexcipients normally used for pharmaceutical preparationswere selected and sequentially evaluated according to theformulation toolbox to serve the study purposes. Twoformulations: 40% Peceol + 60% Capryol 90 and 40%Maisine 35-1 + 60% Capryol 90 were able to meet alltoolbox requirements. For formulation characterization,biorelevant dissolution media combined with USPApparatus 3 (reciprocating cylinder, Bio-Dis) appeared tobe appropriate.
