Elevated levels of nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia have been identified withinshallow soil and groundwater regimes at bulk fertilizer storage and handling facilities inWestern Canada. Traditional means of addressing impacts have proven to be both costlyand often ineffective. This has lead to the development, testing and implementation oftechniques for the remediation of fertilizer based groundwater impacts based on the enhancedin situ biodenitrification (EISBD) principles. EISBD techniques have been evaluatedusing bench studies, field based pilot tests and full scale remediation. It can beconcluded that remediation of the fertilizer-based groundwater impacts using EISBD isgenerally both technically feasible and economical. Important lessons learned, the processof evaluating and applying EISBD techniques, and the positive and negative aspectsof this remediation option are described herein.
