The loss of sugar in refinery molasses is the largest loss in a refinery. The runoff from the last product white sugar boiling is known as return syrup, which passes to the recovery house to recover additional sugar. The quality of the sugar is below product quality specifications and is melted before being returned to the process. Excess affination syrup is also returned to the recovery house, if not used for the production of specialty brown sugars. In addition any surplus sweet water will find its way into the recovery house for further processing with these streams.
