The US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) is currently involved in the design of variousprojectiles that contain a large number of electronic components. Some of thesecomponents have manifested a sensitivity to shock and vibration that can result indecreased performance and/or failure. As a result ARL embarked upon an effort todesign and evaluate a variety of shock isolator designs utilizing a variety of techniques.A suite of shock isolation tests was developed to characterize various isolation techniquesfor a small projectile mounted electronic component. The tests included both shaker anddrop test characterizations and metrics. The fixturing for the electronic componentunderwent various configuration changes based on what level of similarity to the actualmounting plate was desired.Several vendors were solicited for isolation concepts given the constraints of mountingthe electronic components. Each of these concepts was evaluated and ranked. The twomost effective isolation solutions were recommended to the program.
