New Advancements in the Implementation of Low Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (LMDI) Foams for Automotive NVH Applications

Polyurethane foam has long been an attractive solution for a number of automotive NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) applications. While foam has provided excellent performance characteristics, capital intensive equipment installations and ventilation concerns often compelled a manufacturer to use acoustic baffles instead. Two new forces are at play in the NVH landscape that are changing the conventional wisdom: 1. Implementation of low methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (LMDI) foams has significantly reduced the need for expensive in-plant ventilation systems. 2. New linear fixed ratio processing equipment provides for more accurate processing while eliminating the need for costly, custom, axial piston machines. Superior performance and other favorable factors are compelling manufactures to choose foam over acoustic baffles.
