This paper studies the numerical andexperimental development of flow patternsand pressure profiles inside a variable depthpocket of a hydrostatic journal bearing. Theparameters used in this study consist of thepockets aspect ratio (pockets depth to lengthratio), restrictor inlet conditions, the shaftsvelocity and bearing clearance. The analysiswill be conducted with both low and high(shaft) rotation speeds.The numerical code CFD-ACE+ utilizes thefull three-dimensional Navier-Stokesequations for the steady-state incompressibleNewtonian fluid with constant properties.Results will produce both vector and pressurefields within the pocket. As well anddetermine the location of vortical cells in boththe upstream and downstream locations.The experimental analysis consists of tracingthe particles flow pattern by means of highspeed high resolution video-cameras. Thiswill be accomplished by capturing the tracesof small particles injected into the restrictor ofthe pocket. A separate method for retrievingthe flow field will use PIV (Particle ImageVelocimetry) software and will be used to
