There are many different types of valves available on the market today. One type is the butterfly valve which made its debut in the late 1940s. Prior to that, the predominant valves being used in the industry were gate valves for on-off applications and globe style valves for control. While these valves seemed to do the job, they were large in size, heavy in weight and required a great amount of force to operate. The birth of the butterfly valve introduced the industry to a valve that is lighter in weight, smaller in size, provides a drop-tight shutoff and requires only a quarter-turn (90 degrees) to go from full open to full close. Because of these advantages, butterfly valves have become increasingly popular and have displaced the gate and globe valve in some applications. There are different types of butterfly valves, including resilient-seated, high performance, and triple-offset. Each of these will be discussed after a review of butterfly valves in general.
