Bridge scour is one of the leading causes of bridge failure. The exposure andsubsequent undermining of the pier/abutment foundations through the erosive action of a floodcan result in the structural failure of a bridge. Bridges that are subject to periods of flood/highflow require monitoring during those times in order to protect the traveling public. In this paper,an innovative live-bed scour monitoring device using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor wasdeveloped and demonstrated in-situ during the Aere typhoon flood. In the present study, the insituFBG scour monitoring system is useful for real-time local scour depth measurements, and ithas proven to be valid for indicating the sedimentation depth during the storm flood period atthe Dadu Bridge. The field results indicate that the real-time monitoring system using thisinstrumentation have the potential for practical applications.
